The story behind UNFOLD
UNFOLD was born from the deep belief that photography can be more than just an image to look at.
It can be an encounter that helps you look at yourself with more gentleness and reminds you of who you truly are.
The first sprak of UNFOLD, 15 years ago
The first spark was likely ignited back in 2010, when I began with artistic portrait photography.
A project like GIRLS (2012) already showed how powerful vulnerability and authenticity can be on camera.
The series was awarded, including the title Qualified European Photographer (QEP) and exhibited in several places.
More than just images
In the years that followed, I made many portraits. Again and again it became clear how valuable sensitive photography can be: people recognized themselves in the images in a way that was often surprising and healing.
Yet it felt like something bigger was in motion - that this work needed a deeper form.
Because of the appreciation I received at exhibitions, I felt that this work was really for me.
The meeting that brought UNFOLD to life
What began as an ordinary photo session grew into something very special.
In front of my lens, Olessia let go of her masks, hesitant but increasingly free. Looking back at herself later, she said, "I didn't know I could see myself like this."
Those words confirmed what I had long felt: photography can be more than a portrait. It can be a mirror that gently brings you back to yourself. That's how UNFOLD took on its meaning.
About Danny, founder of UNFOLD
I am Danny Van der Elst (°1985), photographer and artist from Mechelen. For more than fifteen years I have been using my camera not only to make images, but to make encounters possible.
What drives me is the authenticity that becomes visible when someone dares to show themselves.
My work has been exhibited in various venues. Besides UNFOLD, I work as a visual artist. You can discover my artistic projects at www.dannyvanderelst.com and on Instagram via @dannyvanderelst.
